10 Tips to Properly Measure Your Blood Pressure

1 min read

  1. Empty your bladder beforehand.

  2. Rest in a quiet, noise free environment for 5 minutes before measuring.

  3. Do NOT talk.

  4. Ensure your blood pressure cuff fits properly (not too tight, not too loose).

  5. Place the blood pressure cuff over your skin, not your clothing.

  6. Keep your back supported.

  7. Keep your legs supported. Do not let them dangle.

  8. Uncross your legs.

  9. Make sure your arm is located at the level of your heart (not higher, not lower).

  10. Rest your arm on an arm chair.

Why does all this matter? An inaccurate blood pressure measurement can result in an inaccurate diagnosis. An inaccurate diagnosis can result in an inadequate treatment plan. An inadequate treatment plan can result in medical harm.

Details matter. Find a doctor who cares about the details.
